Ahhhhh hair growth! Probably one of my absolute favourite topics to talk about. In this post, I am spilling my top hair growth tips!

Ahhhhh hair growth! Probably one of my absolute favourite topics to talk about (I’m sure you’ll see quite a bit about hair growth-related stuff on here, so if that’s your jam, yay!).

For those who may not know, in 2019, I lost my hair and have been obsessed with growing it back ever since! Once I began seeing new hair growth, I pretty much made it my mission to grow my hair back as healthy and thick as I possibly could.

But how do I know that what I did ACTUALLY worked? Well…see I’m no expert here, so I don’t. What I can tell you is, before it fell out (thanks to chemo), it was very thin, frail, and took FOREVER to grow… like forever….

Here is a picture of my blonde locks before losing my hair. I became obsessed with hair care about 2 years before this photo was taken. I put SO MUCH effort into my hair to make it longer and thicker (which eventually worked, as you can tell!), but this was years in the making.

Now my hair grows pretty fast (I have to get my roots fixed much more often than I would like to) and has grown back much thicker than before –like whose hair is this?

Here are a few of my tips that I truly believed helped me with my hair growth (or hair re-growth, I should say):

1. Get all of your vitamins in

Eating healthier was a lifestyle change that I was already working on during the time that I began to grow my hair back in 2019 and I could 100% see the benefits of it in my hair growth.

My absolute favourite way to sneak those vitamins in is through smoothies. Smoothies are (in my opinion) the best thing ever. Not only can you make them whatever flavour you would like, but you can also sneak in any sort of supplements/ingredients and completely mask the taste of those not-so-yummy ingredients!

In terms of what I would add to my smoothies, it honestly varied based on what I was craving and, let’s get real here, what I had in the fridge at the time. There is no specific ingredient, but any healthy fruits/vegetables/supplements that contribute to an overall healthy diet will not only help your body, but also help your hair.

Outside of smoothies, I try my best to make a conscious effort to eat as well as I can. A healthy diet looks completely different for everyone, so I won’t provide tips on that in this blog post, but you know your body best! Eat your fruits, eat your veggies, and drink your water!

2. Almond milk (wait, what?)

The tip I never realized until a year later…. almond milk. As I was starting my journey of eating healthier, I realized that I had a slight dairy intolerance – so I decided to try out dairy-free milk. I found a brand of almond milk that I loved and drank it every day in my coffee, smoothies, and in anything else that I would typically use milk for.

It wasn’t until about a year into my hair growth journey that I remembered hearing somewhere that almonds are great for hair growth. I decided to look it up and as it turns out, adding a splash of almond milk to my coffee every day was helping me more than I thought ;)

Almonds themselves are rich in many vitamins and minerals including proteins, magnesium, fibre, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, vitamin E, B vitamins, potassium, zinc, calcium, and the list continues. The omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, along with the vitamin E and magnesium, are the key nutrients that help hair grow thick and healthy.

Now if you’re not the biggest fan of almond milk, you can totally just snack on plain almonds or incorporate them into your diet in other ways (like in your smoothies!)

On the topic of coffee…

3. Collagen powder

…in my morning coffee to be more exact! I began adding collagen powder into my coffee every morning about 10-ish months into my hair growth journey. To be honest, I had no idea it even existed until a few of my lovely followers on Instagram recommended it to me! I figured that since a few of you were mentioning it, it must be worth a try.

So what exactly is collagen and how does it help with hair growth?

Collagen is a protein that our bodies actually produce. This protein helps our skin, bones, muscles, tendons, and hair! However, as we get older, our bodies begin to produce less and less collagen. Thus, taking a collagen supplement regularly helps to support the collagen that’s already in our bodies do its job! Along with supporting hair growth, collagen supplements can help with skin, joint aches, as well as adding protein into our diet.

4. Great quality hair products

The ingredients found in hair products actually do matter when it comes to the health of our hair! I don’t know too much about the ingredients that go into shampoos or conditioners, but here are the ingredients I make sure my hair products are free off, among other things:

• Sulfates

• Phthalates

• Parabens

• Silicones

• Alcohol

Make sure you check the back of the bottle before deciding to spend your money!

5. Grow Gorgeous hair growth serum

MY HOLY GRAIL HAIR PRODUCT for when I first began growing my hair back! I originally found the brand Grow Gorgeous thanks to some amazing cancer survivors that I followed on Instagram during my journey. A few of them spoke highly of the brand (especially this serum) so naturally, I ordered some right then and there (although I wasn’t quite able to begin growing my hair back then – but you bet I had them waiting for when I could).

For the specifics, here is description of this serum straight from the Grow Gorgeous website: https://rstyle.me/+tD74aM6foTkvX8tDigS9oA

When my hair was very short, I would apply 20 drops to my scalp every night before bed and give myself a good scalp massage. Now, I use it on day 3 & 4 hair, when I’m typically wearing my hair up. This product claims that it doesn’t leave your hair looking oily, but I prefer not to use it on my clean scalp. That being said, this serum smells AMAZING (although it is a stronger smell – just in case you are sensitive to smells).

6. Skip the washing

Having a good hair washing routine has been a vital part in keeping my hair healthy and strong. At the moment, I am washing my hair every four days and hope to go even longer between washes in the future.

The reason you want to have a good routine established is because your scalp and hair actually NEED the oils that your scalp naturally produces! If you’re washing them away every single day, you’re not allowing them the time to do their work in benefiting your hair.

The key to being able to go longer and longer between washes is to go slowly. Start with two days between washes, do that for a month or two, then add another day in between washes. Work your way up from there until you find your happy medium.

This is also the time to find your go-to hairstyles for day 2, 3, or 4 hair ;)

Side note: you know your hair best. Make sure your hair washing routine works with your hair type! If your hair is thinner, you may easily be able to go longer without washing it, but if you do have thicker hair, washing your hair every other day may be better for you.

7. Coconut oil hair masks

Good ol’ coconut oil hair masks – the mask that I’m sure everyone has heard about! Like many, this mask has been a go-to for me for years (even before losing my hair), but after doing many many many hair masks, I have a specific way of doing the mask to make sure that I make the most of it.

For a complete breakdown of how I do my coconut oil hair masks to maximize the benefits, read my blog post: here

Another important tip is to give yourself a good scalp massage while your scalp is covered in coconut oil. Scalp massages are great for stimulating blood flow in the scalp, keeping you scalp moisturized, and promoting hair growth. Coconut oil can also help with many scalp conditions! Who doesn’t love a two-birds-with-one-stone type of tip?

Those are my tips that I have been following over the last two years which I truly believe have contributed to my hair growth. I know this may seem like a lot, but try out a few, get them into your routine and then add a few more!

Please remember that everyone’s hair is different. Everyone’s hair grows at different speeds and is a different texture. That being said, these tips may not be ideal for all hair types, but they are what have worked very well for me.

Best of luck on your hair growth journey and I hope that one (or a few) of these tips help you!
